Where do I belong?

The short answer is everywhere. You always belong… so says Sebene Selassie, M.A., teacher and author of the book You Belong: A Call for Connection. It is quite an interesting read for one who would like to begin reconsidering how we, humans, belong and what we experience when we feel we do not (whether that be with our family, friends, school, in our own bodies or just in this world). Feeling like I don’t belong often is a physical experience for me; one of anxiety or sadness that leads to tightness in my chest and my jaw. When that happens, I am far less likely to be open, engaging or self-confident. And that is a problem for me! I want to be myself in all contexts and carry a sense of belonging and worthiness with me as much as I can. Thus, my exploration into Ms. Selassie’s book.

How do you know when the “not belonging” part of you is triggered? Examining what it means to belong can be a rewarding and eye-opening process. Check out Ms. Selassie’s book and begin your journey towards feeling like you belong anywhere and everywhere, which includes with yourself in your body, in your own way. Therapy can be an excellent place to explore this and the life experiences that have influenced whether we feel we do or do not belong.
